Blog 2:Makerspace is Awesome

In the afternoon on this winter day, we made a class trip to the engineering site on campus; makerspace. Makerspace is where art, creativity, design, and dreams, clash with technology to create wonderful 3D pieces of art without all the mess that glue makes. All this is done on the computer and there is a always somebody to walk you through and answer your questions if this is new to you.

In the maker space, there are 3D printers, laser cutters, computers and one detailed 3D Printer. Images that are created -through Tinkercad and other 3D printer sites-, can be printed for free. The center is usually open on Sundays to the public to have access and to print their creations.

What I learned

The presenter showed the group a prosthetic hand that was made through a 3D printer. He gave us a brief background on prosthetic limbs and told us that "in a life time of a person who uses prosthetic limbs, the government will provide them with 2 and then they are on their own". This is where makerspace comes in. In my opinion, the makerspace is awesome. They can build prosthetics for those in need of it for next to a nothing fee.

Maker space is available to schools - they do presentations to students and give them hands on practice on using their equipments through the maker mobile.
